This pendant that has been 5 years in the making, blends the ornate richness of Mehndi with the romantic allure of Gothic design, creating a piece that speaks to a love of ancient tradition and dark aesthetic. It is more than jewellery; it is a personal testament to heritage, artistry, and the five-year evolution of an idea brought to life ❤︎
This piece began as an image in my mind’s eye, from a lifetime of wearing Mehndi and even putting Mehndi on others. I just love how our hands look when decorated in beautiful patterns and adorned by jewels. The manifestation of this piece is symbolic of a meeting point between the ornate art of my culture and the shadowed beauty I have always been drawn to.
Today, it lives as a Gothic Mehndi hand! Its lines inspired by the flowing, ceremonial art of Mehndi, yet sculpted with the dark romanticism of Gothic design with the oh so long nails! I worked with a Swedish sculpture artist to help me bring this image to life. Every. Singe. Detail. I mulled over for days, weeks and months. It needed to be perfect before I could share it with you.
Mehndi, usually drawn on skin in celebration and protection, is here forged in permanence—an homage to the traditions that raised me, and the culture that stoked the fire of my obsession with jewellery in the first place ❤️🔥
Held within its grasp rests an Opal, glowing with shifting colour like a secret whispered in light. In Indian symbolism, Opal carries the essence of transformation, clarity, and spiritual harmony. Its fire seemed the only stone worthy of this design; something alive, something that changes, something that feels like memory and mystery all at once.
This pendant is the fusion of two worlds: the intricate richness of my Indian culture and the Gothic allure that has always felt like home. It is a love letter to both—the brightness and the shadow, the ritual and the reverie, the eternal and the ephemeral.🌹
