When Florence Nightingale was born to a wealthy British family, it was expected that she would become a proper high society lady -- but she had other plans. She defied her parents' plans for marriage and instead, in 1854, she traveled to Scutari in the Ottoman Empire with 38 volunteer nurses that she had trained to treat the wounded soldiers of the Crimean War.
